Frisbee League action is heating up with two closely contested games last Thursday night. Flickatchu was tested more than ever with Ultimate Benders leading for most of the game. Ultimate Bender’s captain, Patrick Valero, decided to go with a strategy of four men and three women on the field when on offense forcing some of Flickatchu’s best players off the field and creating mismatches with the women. In the end, it was not meant to be, but the only remaining undefeated team in the league showed that they aren’t invincible.

The 8:40 game was also a thrilling hard-fought battle. Frisbeasts were looking to secure their first victory of the season, while BigBang hoped to expand to a 3-0 record. The first half was back and forth with BigBang seeming to gain momentum at the half taking a 6-5 lead. However, thanks to half-time adjustments from John Lombard of the Frisbeasts, the second half was largely dominated by the Frisbeasts. During the spirit circle at the end of the match, both teams showed their admiration of the other team’s ability and heart during the game.

Spirit players are selected after each game by the opposing teams. The winners are those whose attitudes and play most impressed their opponents.

Jen Leung (Flickatchu)

Jen Leung is a local Guangke freshman majoring in financial management. Originally from Dongguan, she was introduced late last year and has been playing every week since. A couple of her classmates who play on Friday nights first introduced the sport to her. When asked why she liked Frisbee, she said, “When I first played Frisbee, I feel in love with it because it helped me exercise and enrich my life. Through Frisbee, I’ve met all kinds of friends. Most importantly, I like the team spirit of Frisbee, the spirit of never giving up, and encouraging each other.”

Jen 是广科大一新生，专业是财务管理。 她来自东莞。她首次接触到飞盘是在去年的时候，她班上的一些同学会在每周五晚上相约在西湖乐园打飞盘，Jen 也加入到其中来。 当被问到为什么喜欢飞盘时，她说：“当我第一次玩飞盘时，我爱上了它，因为它不但帮助我锻炼身体而且也丰富了我的课外生活。 通过飞盘，我遇到了各种各样的朋友。 最重要的是，我喜欢飞盘的团队精神，永不言弃，互相鼓励的精神。”

Jordan Neal (Ultimate Benders)

Jordan is relatively new to China, having arrived last September in Humen as a teacher. Jordan teaches English, math and science at Humen foreign language school. Jordan is one of four foreigners from Humen who travel over an hour each week to attend the league. He hasn’t always played Frisbee but has always loved sports playing football and running growing up. When asked about the progress of his team, he responded, “I think our team have shown great improvement over these last few weeks. We are really starting to get better as a team. Long may it continue!”

Lydia Kempf (Frisbeasts)

Unlike Jordan, Lydia has been in China over 11 years ever since TLC school opened. Lydia speaks Chinese at a high level which helps her in communicating with her Chinese teammates. Lydia teaches first grade, coaches high school and middle school volleyball and is the athletic director at TLC. Lydia came to last nights game in pretty rough shape with a serious case of jet lag. Lesser people would have stayed home and with just cause. Yet she toughed it out and played her heart out. During a crucial play in the second half, she made a diving catch in the end zone that sent her sliding into the back wall scoring for her team. Everyone stopped, expecting a serious injury. Yet she got up and kept playing without asking for a sub. Lydia is not to be messed with and all the Frisbeasts are very grateful for that.

Jacky Tan (BigBang)

Jacky is the very first repeat Spirit Player of the Week. Those on the field understand why. Jacky is a force all over the field often requiring a double team to guard. He runs faster and longer than most players on any team. More than most players on BigBang, he requires special attention on defense. Despite his dominance, Jacky is always cheerful and never lets his competitiveness take priority over sportsmanship. BigBang will be sad to see him go when he leaves for an internship in the states on May 27th.
